Summer

“I came for the winter, I stayed for the Summer” – true for so many newly permanent Fernie residents. Fernie’s summer season starts as soon as the snow starts to melt and doesn’t stop until those first flakes fall again in October.

The mountains in the Summer provide a wonderful scenery of rich green vegetation. The perfect clear blue lakes are a great place to enjoy a dip, or relax on the shore and simply enjoy the relaxing sounds of the lapping waters around you.

Climbing Mt Hosmer

Fernie has the Elk River running right through its heart. The River and the surrounding mountains provide a whole host of activities to keep you occupied, including mountain biking, hiking, golf, fly fishing, canyon rafting or simply riding the river on a tractor tire. If you don’t find that the local outdoor waters are what you’re looking for, you can visit the local Fernie Aquatic Centre, just 2 minutes walk from Cinnamon Bear Lodge. It provides lane swimming, waterslide, steam room, hot tub and a children’s leisure pool throughout the year, and the large glass wall allows the bathers to enjoy superb panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

Mountain Biking

Fernie, home of the annual TransRockies bike ride, offers a whole range of mountain biking opportunities – from the easy winding trail through to some of the most challenging single track riding you’ll find anywhere in the world! At Cinnamon Bear Lodge, you’re ideally located and just a short ride to the start of many of the trails that start here in town.

The local bike map prepared by Fernie Mountain Bike Club has a wealth of information about most of the trails accessible from Fernie, and a paper copy can be bought from a number of businesses in town. In their trail map extract above, Cinnamon Bear Lodge is at the bottom left corner.

Fernie Alpine Resort offers some great downhill mountain biking with the added bonus of a lift back up the hill! The hill is just a 10 minute drive from Cinnamon Bear Lodge and has loads of parking.

To make your life easier when you get back to the Lodge, we provide a workbench for any repairs you need to do, a wash area and for peace of mind we also have storage for your bikes in our garage.

Hiking

Fernie is famous for its backcountry in the Summer as well as the Winter – there are hundreds of miles worth of trails and mostly accessible from right here in town. The trails can be as easy or as challenging as you like – for an easy start you can walk the main town loop and Old Stumpy Trail or if you want a bit more of a challenge The Three Sisters, Mount Hosmer and Mount Fernie are on your doorstep. And of course, there’s a whole load more in between!

Running and Trail Running

You can, of course, run any trail that can be hiked, and Fernie offers a lot of space in which you can eat up those miles while training at a kilometre above sea level. If you aren’t into running on dirt there are runs you can do on the side of quiet roads while taking in the beauty of the area. My favourite tun down Cokato Road provides you with a view of the ski hill for almost half of its length. I’ve recently added a news post to the blog that will provide some ideas about running in the area. There is also a Facebook page called Fernie Trail Running that provides information. Come out, get running!

Fishing

The Elk River runs right through town and is renowned for offering some of the best fly fishing in the world! The Elk River Guiding company provide all the information you could wish for – and both male and female led guided trips too – check out their website.

It’s not all about the activities though. Fernie is rich in mountain culture. You can enjoy farmer’s markets, the town’s museum, mountain races or treat yourself to some local delicacies at the Mountain Market. Or why not catch a film at the local cinema?

There is so much to do in the Summer that those first flakes of snow falling from the sky in the autumn seem to come round far too quickly…

Golf in Fernie

One of the top 25 golf courses in BC, this 18 hole course is a par 70. Only a five minute drive from the lodge, this beautiful course has fantastic views under the Three Sisters, and of Mt Hosmer with its famous Ghostrider.

Whitewater

If you want an adrenalin rush, but you want a day off biking, what about white-water rafting in Fernie? There are a couple of outfits that run rafting trips that range from a gentle guided punt down the river to a wild roller-coaster ride down the Elk River Canyon! Can’t get enough? Then there’s the Bull river as well just waiting to be ridden.
