There are a number of ways to get to Fernie. You can hire a car using one of the links on this page, you can use a shuttle bus, or you can use the Greyhound. Driving directions are provided at the bottom of this page.
Transfers
There are a couple of companies including Mountain Perks Shuttles that provide easy to use shuttle buses that leave Fernie and Calgary at convenient times. The Greyhound is good for the cost conscious, and their buses pass through town travelling in each direction twice a day, albeit at unsocial hours sometimes.
Car Hire/Self Drive
If you are driving, getting to Fernie is straight forward in both the summer and winter. We have often been asked if the road to Fernie can be passed when there is snow on the ground. The best answer that we can give is, if there is a blizzard, you should apply caution and common-sense, but Highway 3, also known as the Crowsnest Highway is a major route across the Rockies and is therefore kept snow free by the various highway departments along the route. Take a right onto this road and soon you will be in Fernie. Remember, you can always check Drive BC for information about road conditions. Oh, and don’t forget your driver’s license!
Cowboy Trail
We must make special mention the Cowboy Trail, also known as highway 22. Best driven in summer or when it hasn’t snowed, this road has amazing views as it runs down the eastern flank of the rockies. The majestic mountains rise up above you for the length of your journey, and it’s the way we travel if we are driving to Calgary. You drive through the foothills in ranch country where every turn throws up something new. In the summer we’ve often seen plenty of wildlife by the side of the road, including elk, moose and coyotes. If you are especially lucky you might see cowboys on horseback rounding up cattle.
Driving Directions
The easiest route from Calgary airport to Fernie is to get onto Highway 2 (also known as the Deerfoot Trail), and stay on this road until you see signs for Highway 3, which brings you straight to Fernie. If you would like full directions from Calgary and other locations you can do this by either choosing an airport from the list and clicking Go, or alternatively, typing in a starting point – either a zip code or a postal code in North America and pressing Go.
